can i just say how i CANNOT watch this episode? everyone keeps telling me i have to, with my thing about van gogh, but i just cannot face how it will rip my heart out because i have so many ~FEELINGS about him, and even seeing this has made me kind of really really depressed, because fuck, that was his whole life, you guys. him reaching out to people, and them being like “yeaaaah you’re a bit creepy and intense and generally hard to do, laters” and like, never having much in the way of validation that he was actually good at his profession, and ugh. idk, it just upsets me.

The Yellow House (1888), Vincent van Gogh
Oil on Canvas, 72 X 91.5 cm Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam

In May 1888, Van Gogh rented four rooms on the right-hand side of a house on the Place Lamartine in Arles. His living quarters were the ones with the green shutters. His bedroom lay beyond. Vincent had finally found a place where he could not only paint but also welcome his friends. His goal was to establish a “Studio of the South,” where he and like-minded artists could work together. Just as he did in Nuenen and Paris, Van Gogh here depicts his own surroundings. To the left we see the restaurant where he usually took his meals. His friend, the postman Joseph Roulin, lived to the right, behind the first railroad bridge. The view is also an exploration of color contrast: “What a powerful sight, those yellow houses in the sun and then the unforgettable clarity of the blue [sky],” he wrote to Theo in the letter that accompanied a drawing he had made after the painting.

hearing that he befriended the postman is delightful to me, because so many things about this period were crap for a bro, like oh idk, CHILDREN THROWING ROCKS AT HIM and gauguin being a terrible boyfrond and not replying to his text messages.

Gauguin’s chair (1888), Vincent van Gogh
Oil on Canvas, 90.5 x 72.5 cm Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam

Standing on a colorful carpet is a chair of dark brown wood, with curved backrests and an upholstered seat, upon which books lie. It is evening or nighttime, the space is illuminated by gaslight. With great sureness of touch, Van Gogh painted the blue shadows and reflections thrown by the lamplight onto the shining wood of the chair. This painting of his friend’s chair was made in November 1888, when Gauguin was staying with Van Gogh in the so-called Yellow House.

Rodarte Spring/Summer 2012 - Van Gogh.

I want it all, and I want it now.

i had a bit of a “is that a crowd i see before me? come, let me have a panic attack in it!” moment this morning, so OF COURSE the best idea i’ve ever had is to watch “painted with words” and have creys over benedict cumberbatch playing van gogh & getting all excited about turner, that seems like a great plan!

“There is a similar reluctance about taking me into the house as there would be about having a large shaggy dog in the house; he’ll come into the room with his wet paws, and he’s so shaggy, he’ll get in everyone’s way…bark so loud…in short, he’s a filthy animal. Very well, but the animal has a human history, and, although it’s a dog, a human soul, one with finer feelings than that, capable of feeling what people say about him, which an ordinary dog can’t do.”
(this is from when van gogh had to move back in with his parents after they’d had a huge fight about him being weird, and he’d stormed off for a while. is…is van gogh secretly a cranky, dutch sirius black?)

“YOU CAN DO BETTER THAN THIS!”
“why may that man on the left not have a knee?”
YOU, GOOD SIR, ARE A COCK.
